It is astonishing how quickly a record of this kind will show up the locations that seem to be especially susceptible to lightning discharges. In the course of the season a few points will have a miniature forest of pins grouped around them, while long stretches of track will show no pins at all.

When a particular location begins to accumulate a collection of these telltale pins, a lightning arrester can be Installed at this point and the trouble at once eliminated or at least materially reduced. July 4. The Saratoga Limited, the finest and fastest passenger train on the I. nnd II. between Saratoga and New York, was wrecked in this village, nnd. nlllumh the train was completely demolished, not a passenger was killed or injured.

The train left Saratoga with twenty passengers and a crew of seven. At the north end of this village the Schenectady electric railway connects with the steam railway. The switch tender made a mistake nnd opened the switch, thinking It was the local train to be sidetracked. Instead it was the limited, goiug fifty miles an hour. When it reached the switch there was a crash and the entire train leaped from the track.

The engine parted from the train nnd la nded in a ditch on its side. Engineer Ed Crane and Fireman William Flanuery stuck to their pols and were not Injured. The, four palace cars followed the track for a few feet and then overturned and went Into the ditch. The fact that the engine parted from the train and went to one side, preventing telescoping, probably saved a score of lives. Many passengers were imprisoned in the shattered cars, nnd It was some time before all were taken out.
